But it's also a BIG commitment! It's always important to be informed.
There's a saying that goes, "Adopt, Don't Shop." There's a saying that goes, "Adopt, Don't Shop." Puppy mills and some dog breeders care more about generating money than properly caring for their animals, and by buying a pet from them, you are only further motivating them to continue operating inhumanely. Animal overpopulation is already a serious problem - it is said that in order for every animal to find a home, each person would have to adopt five animals. If you have a family of five, that's 25 pets! So what happens to all these animals without homes? Many are abandoned (like June Bug and her brother July, pictured), where they are forced to fend for themselves with little chance of survival on their own. The animals that are fortunate enough to end up at shelters are on borrowed time - even young, healthy animals are euthanized (killed) to make room for others if they aren't adopted in time. It is estimated that about 920,000 shelter pets are euthanized yearly in the US alone - another life is extinguished every 15 seconds. If you are willing to open your heart and your home to a pet, it should be to save a rescue pet's life!

It's extremely important to do your research when making a life-changing decision like adopting a pet. Does your area of residence allow animals? Is your home big or small? Do you have children or other animals? Some breeds of dogs are more energetic than others and require more attention, which may not be easy to provide if you spend a lot of time at work or traveling. Take some time to learn about the species and breed you're interested in. It's also important to research the specific animal you're considering adopting. Temperament and disposition can vary from animal to animal based on his age and background. A puppy will be more energetic than an older dog, and an animal that has had a history of neglect may be more timid.

It's typical to feel excited when you bring a new pet home, but don't forget that your adorable new dog is a BIG responsibility! Animals can be shy when brought to a different home, so give your new addition some time to warm up to you and get used to the new sights, smells, and people. One of the first things to consider concerning your pet is veterinary care - cats and dogs need different vaccines based on their ages, and if the pet isn't isn't fixed already, it's important to schedule a spay/neuter appointment as soon as possible. Pets need day-to-day care, including food and exercise. Make sure your pet has a safe place to play and isn't free to wander - an unrestrained animal is in danger of predators or being hit by a car. It's also your job to keep your pet up-to-date for heartworm medication and protected against fleas and ticks! Though a new pet is a lot of responsibility, many pet owners agree that the work is worth it, and your pet will enhance your life with years of laughter and love
Rehoming fees are determined by the owner. The purpose of a fee is to deter animal abusers who are looking for a cheap or free animal, as people who pay for their pet are much more likely to stay committed and take good care of it.
